XVII International Media Readings in Moscow ‘Mass Media and Communications-2025’

On October 23-24, 2025, the Faculty of Journalism, Lomonosov Moscow State University, successfully held The 17th International Media Readings in Moscow ‘Mass Media and Communications-2025’. The conference addressed diverse research directions within the field of journalistic education, unified under the title ‘Eхploring Past and Foreseeing Future: Education for Media Professionals in Russia, China and Beyond’.

Moscow Readings conference was convened with support from the Ministry of Digital Development, Communications and Mass Media of the Russian Federation and in partnership with the Union of Journalism Education of Russian and Chinese Universities, the Russian Union of Journalists, the Russian-African Club of Lomonosov Moscow State University, the Association of Russian and African Journalists, and the National Association of Mass Media Researchers (NAMMI).

A pivotal event of Moscow Readings-2025 was the round table of the Union of Journalism Education of Chinese and Russian Universities, opened by Professor Elena Vartanova, Dean of the Faculty of Journalism, Lomonosov Moscow State University, and Co-Chair of the Union from the Russian side. In her address, she underscored the inevitable necessity to modernize journalism education for the digital age, stressing the integration of new digital tools and the exploration of artificial intelligence's potential in academiс studies. The Russian perspective was further elaborated by presentations from Yaroslav Skvortsov, Dean of the Faculty of International Journalism, MGIMO University, Vladimir Tulupov, Dean of the Faculty of Journalism, Voronezh State University, Alexander Gimelstein, Head of the Graduate School of Journalism and Media Production, Irkutsk State University, and Lyudmila Makarova, Deputy Director of the Institute of Philology and Journalism, Lobachevsky State University of Nizhny Novgorod.

The round table meeting gathered distinguished deans and senior representatives from esteemed Chinese universities, including Nanjing University, Chongqing University, Renmin University, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Heilongjiang University, Xinjiang University, Shanghai International Studies University, and Beijing Foreign Studies University, fostering a rich and multifaceted dialogue. The Chinese delegation, led by Professor Zhou Yong, Co-Chair of the Union from the Chinese side and Dean of Renmin University's School of Journalism and Communication, presented a comprehensive outlook on today's AI age and its new generation of media professionals that has become the key support for industrial upgrading and strategic implementation. 

The conference's second-day plenary session featured global insights from Professor Jairo Lugo-Ocando, Dean of the College of Communication at the University of Sharjah, and Professor Shi-xu, Director of the Center for Contemporary Chinese Discourse Studies, Hangzhou Normal University and Honorary Professor of the Faculty of Journalism, Lomonosov Moscow State University. Their speeches were devoted to the current state of scientific journalism in the UAE and new multiculturalism in Asia, respectively.

Throughout all sessions, experts from Russia, China, the UAE, India, Spain, Armenia, Thailand, Bangladesh, Chile, Belarus, and other countries engaged in critical discussions on the deep mediatization of society, the growing power of platform media, the spread of alternative news sources, and the profound risks and opportunities of generative AI in shaping the future of education.

Annually, the Moscow Readings conference is conducted in a hybrid format, accessible both in Russian and English. This format allowed participants worldwide to attend the conference either in person or remotely. In 2025, the Moscow Readings conference also handled simultaneous translation between Russian and Chinese.
