Faculty of Journalism, Lomonosov MSU Visited The 29th All Russia 2025 Modern Journalism Forum

On September 17, 2025, a discussion titled "Journalism Education and Media Studies: What Do the Industry and the Profession Need?" was held in Sochi as part of The 29th All Russia 2025 Modern Journalism Forum. The session organized by the Faculty of Journalism brought leading deans, professors, media managers, and practitioners together to identify the areas for educational development in the rapidly changing media environment.
The key topic of the discussion was the media industry's demand for new specialists. In her opening remarks, Dean of the Faculty of Journalism, Academician of the Russian Academy of Education, Professor Elena Vartanova outlined the challenges that media education faces, including the dynamics of industry development and the social significance of the profession.
The Dean presented a multifaceted model of modern education based on three pillars: knowledge in fundamental humanities, in-depth study of journalism theory and practice, and research. The Faculty of Journalism, Lomonosov Moscow State University places particular emphasis on developing practical skills. Here, the integral part of the educational process includes more than 25 creative workshops organized by leading media companies and specialists (RT, Yandex, VK, Novatek Press Center, Argumenty I Fakty, etc.). Moreover, students complete internships at over 100 media outlets.
The discussion featured Associate Professor and Head of the Digital Journalism Department Olga Smirnova,Leading Researcher and Head of the International Affairs Office Anna Gladkova, Associate Professor at the Department of Sociology of Mass Communications Maria Anikina, and Leading Researcher and Deputy DeanDenis Dunas.
Experts noted the diversification of programs in journalism and media communications across the country. In addition to classic journalism programs, universities are actively developing programs in international journalism and media communications. Leading universities, including Lomonosov Moscow State University, St. Petersburg State University, and Higher School of Economics, are introducing Master’s programs in artificial intelligence in media, big data journalism, digital communications management, and media management.
According to the experts, including Secretary of the Russian Union of Journalists and Associate Professor of the Faculty of Journalism at Moscow State University Roman Serebryany, close integration of employers into the educational process is essential nowadays. Strengthening the sociological and analytical components of the education process was also identified as a priority.
TV presenters Maria Sittel and Arina Sharapova, media managers Ruslan Novikov and Igor Pototsky, as well as other industry representatives also shared their perspectives at the Forum. They noted that modern journalists must multitask, combine classic reporting skills with digital tools and big data.
On September 19, a roundtable discussion titled "Media Ethics through the Eyes of Youth" was held. Associate Professor of the Faculty of Journalism Maria Anikina, Director of YNPRESS RUSSIA Diana Myasnikova,Secretary of the Russian Union of Journalists and Associate Professor of the Faculty of Journalism at Moscow State University Roman Serebryany delivered speeches at the discussion. The experts presented the Code of Ethics for Young Journalists to over 100 attendees and discussed existing editorial boards that can be used as inspiration for creating high-quality youth-led media. Maria Anikina highlighted the issue of school media outlets. She believes that media education and media ethics projects develop active and responsible members of society. Media education contributes to the development of students as independent actors in media processes and the safe progress in the information space.
The event marked an important milestone in the dialogue between educational institutions and the media industry, outlining concrete paths for joint efforts in educating young specialists.
