Topical seminar on May 14th, 2024: Dr. Maria Laura Ruiu and Research Associate Maria Koroleva

The Faculty of Journalism, Lomonosov Moscow State University proceeds with Topical seminar meetings, a series of online seminars featuring well-known speakers, both Russian and international. The fourth Topical seminar in 2024 is scheduled for May 14, 3 pm MSK. At the meeting, the speakers will discuss topical issues of the relationship between traditional and new media and climate change awareness, and media approaches and audience reactions to emergency events.
Dr. Maria Laura Ruiu, Assistant Professor in Sociology at Northumbria University (UK), will give the first talk Lack of ‘Сommon Sense’ in the Climate Change Debate: Media Behaviour and Climate Change Awareness. During her presentation, she will discuss how traditional and new media influence people’s awareness of climate change. Her research interests include environmental and media sociology with a specific focus on environmental communication, social capital, digital inequality and digital media. She is exploring the Bourdieusian concept of habitus in relation to the combination of technological competencies, environmental awareness and existing socio-economic-cultural backgrounds. Dr. Maria Laura Ruiu, the author of more than 30 papers published in the leading academic journals, has been involved in several interdisciplinary research projects on the management and governance of climate change.
The Faculty of Journalism, Lomonosov Moscow State University will be presented by Maria Koroleva, Research Associate at the Chair of Digital Journalism, Faculty of Journalism, Lomonosov Moscow State University. At the beginning of 2024, she worked as an Executive Secretary of the International Scientific and Practical Conference «Journalism in 2023: Creativity, Profession, Industry». Her primary research interests include modern digital periodicals, news journalism, media psychology, conflicts and media. Maria Koroleva also conducts seminars on several academic disciplines, where students explore professional ethics of a journalist, current practice and technology of work in socio-political journalism, concepts and technologies of modern editorial office, features of creating texts for print and online media. Her latest papers reveal the issues related to a person-centered approach in journalism, Russian online media approaches to the stress-producing events description, and the qualities of online media texts about traumatic events. During the meeting Maria Koroleva will deliver a talk Media Approaches and Audience Reactions to Emergency Events in Russia.

Topical seminars are of utmost importance both for the integration of national research studies into the international academic environment, and for the conceptualization of distinctive features of Russian media studies. The Faculty of Journalism invites everyone to sign up for the seminar and hopes that the issues, touched upon in the course of the event, will trigger productive scientific discussion.
