Dr. Robert Gutsche from Florida Atlantic University (USA) shared the floor with Dr. Maria Anikina from Lomonosov Moscow State University (Russia) to converse on the ideological aspects of journalism. As usual, the speakers viewed the issue in different angles and provided varied contexts for the conversation on ideological expression enabled through journalism.

Dr. Robert Gutsche proposed the notion of ideological correction to describe shifts in news explanations of single articles. The scholar brought to the fore the problem of online stories updates increased through automation. According to the researcher, this technological option that allows for post-published alternations does not only increase the relevance and accuracy of the story but can also lead to complete transformation of protagonist roles and cause-effect explanations. Dr. Gutsche illustrated his point with a specific case study of updated stories on Portland protests, and invited the listeners to ponder on the ramifications this newly-discovered aspect has for journalism research and practice.

Our faculty was represented by Dr. Maria Anikina, who shifted the focus to the theoretical conceptualization of journalism ideology. She gave an overview of the academic interpretations of journalism profession and the normative aspects that are attributed in this regard – such as public service, objectivity, autonomy, immediacy, ethics. The scholar went on to share some of the results of Worlds of Journalism initiative, a large-scale academically driven project that Dr. Anikina has contributed substantially to. In particular, she elaborated on four groups of roles – monitoring, interventionist, monitorial, collaborative – that are all similar in having social elements to them.

Big thanks to the speakers for their multifaceted approaches, and to the participants for demonstrating a keen interest in the problem under discussion!
