Forum of Russian and African Journalism titled “Russia and Africa – cooperation in culture, education and solidarity” was held on March 30, timed to the preparation for the celebrations of the 30th World Press Freedom Day anniversary.

The event attracted government officials, top managers, producers, TV presenters, journalists, public figures, scholars, teachers, cultural workers from Russia and Africa. This time the meeting was held in hybrid format, with experts both gathering in the hall of the Faculty of Global Studies, where Russian-African club is based, and joining online from different parts of the two continents.

Dean of the Faculty of Journalism Professor Elena Vartanova was one of the first to greet the participants with warm words of encouragement. She underlined that both Russia and Africa strive to preserve a highly diverse cultural heritage, a shared value that should be further enshrined by a dedicated association. In line with this, joint efforts should be geared towards tackling issues of education, research, and ethics.

Dean’s inspiring speech was followed by a large number of thought-provoking talks, as Russian and African journalists reflected on the new turn in the inter-state relations, and contributed specific suggestions for strengthening those ties. The speakers voiced their ideas concerning reliable information exchange and localization, protection of journalists, joint advancement of journalism education, and so much more. In particular, suggestions were made by Director of international cooperation at Sputnik News Agency and Radio, Rossiya Segodnya media group Vasily Pushkov, NIDO Russia Chairman Ibe Godwin Ezinna, TV BRICS Editor-in-Chief Anna Lisina, Publication Director at the LE PANAFRICAIN magazine Abdu Karim, and many others. Altogether around 20 experts joined this timely discussion carefully guided by Secretary of Russian-African Club Aleksandr Berdnikov.
