The Faculty Of Journalism Held The 14th International Media Readings In Moscow ‘Mass Media And Communications–2022’

692qiDVDPmc.jpegEmhf9F5LAP8.jpegOn October 27–28, 2022, the 14th International Media Readings in Moscow ‘Mass Media and Communications–2022’ were held at the Faculty of Journalism of Lomonosov Moscow State University. The hybrid-format conference was themed around digital platforms and the future of legacy media. The event was attended by roughly 200 speakers and listeners from 17 countries, including India, Brazil, China, and many others.

The conference was opened with a plenary session, featuring presentations by Professor of the University of Calcutta, IAMCR Ambassador in India, Uma Shankar Pandey, Professor of the Fluminense Federal University, Afonso de Albuquerque, and Dean of the Faculty of Journalism of Lomonosov Moscow State University, Professor Elena Vartanova. The researchers discussed topical issues, such as OTT services from the actor-network theory perspective, legacy media, fake news, representation of social conflicts in the changing architecture of media systems. Numerous listeners joined the discussion in person and via Zoom.

The two-day conference included more than twenty thematic sessions devoted to a variety of important topics: digitalization of journalism in the era of COVID-19, artificial intelligence technologies in media, management of digital socio-political agenda, the changing role of social media in the system of media communication, and so much more.
Two sections were dedicated to the results of the ongoing research projects developed by the faculty groups of scholars. As part of the two projects funded by the Russian Science Foundation, the researchers have been studying media representation of social conflicts and framing in social media.

Colleagues from other countries organized multiple panel sessions, marked by thematic diversity and rich variety of cultural contexts. In particular, participants discussed the significance of Nepali journalism for the global stage, digital transformation of the African media market, digital intersectionality in the Middle East and North Africa, and mobile journalism in South Asia.

Moreover, the conference program included a meeting with chief editors of well-known international and Russian academic journals: 'Journalism Practice', 'Journal of Multicultural Discourses', 'Voprosy teorii i praktiki zhurnalistiki', 'Vestnik Moskovskogo universiteta. Seriya 10. Zhurnalistika', 'World of Media', 'Mediascope', 'Medi@lmanakh'. The experts talked about their projects and shared their experience of promoting academic journals and developing new formats.

The second plenary session featured presentations 'The turn to digital audio: Legacy news and podcasting' by IAMCR Vice-President, Professor Usha Raman from University of Hyderabad, and 'Understanding Chinese diplomacy as cultural discourse' by Professor Shi-xu from Hangzhou Normal University. The scholars discussed the rapidly developing segment of media industry, and talked about an emerging paradigm in communication studies, which offers a de-Westernizing perspective and facilitates cultural development.

The 14th International Media Readings in Moscow ‘Mass Media and Communications–2022’ was supported by the Ministry of Digital Development, Communications and Mass Media of the Russian Federation and co-organized by the National Association of Mass Media Researchers.
