Department of Photojournalism and Media Technology was founded under the name Department of Newspaper and Media Technology in 1962. It was renamed in 2012 to stress the visual nature of its major specialty. Its program includes two main training modules: Photojournalism and Mass Communication Design.

Doctor Bakulin was proud to note that MSU is one of the rare academic institutions in Russia that can boast of a comprehensive approach to the disciplines of photojournalism. During its half-century history, the module was refined to perfectly balance practical training and theoretical education. Following the Department’s motto that a strong theoretical base makes a good practitioner, photojournalists study the history of photojournalism, the basics of photography composition and build editing, genre specifics of photojournalism.

Practical training certainly constitutes another key element of the program, and students are actively participating in reportage photography, studio photography and other types of activity. Education is completed with the presentation of diploma work, which can either be of a theoretical nature, or take the form of an author project, such as a photo series or a multimedia project. The latter is particularly appreciated given the current trends towards the dominance of digital multimedia platforms.

The program of the second module follows the similar pattern, successfully combining theoretical knowledge with practical skills. Mass Communication Design is a relatively new module designed to meet the requirements of today’s media industry, characterized by the growing reliance on visual media language. The module curators organize project screenings, invite prominent media designers as guest speakers and engage the students into various types of activities, which, apart from traditional sketching and modeling, include work in multimedia environment.

By the end of their education, students of this module present mature author projects, which are generally enjoyed by the members of the board. Besides, students of both modules are provided with an opportunity to perform their internship in different media outlets, participate in photo exhibitions and contests, where they can be appreciated by renowned photojournalists and media designers.
