Prokhorov Readings meeting was held on April 1

166761877_10159164432514850_2557361864748035066_n.jpgThis year Prokhorov Readings meeting was held to celebrate a key date – the 90 th anniversary of great Russian scholar Evgeniy Prokhorov, who made an outstanding contribution to the development of modern Russian journalism theory. Professor Prokhorov initiated the establishment of the Department of Sociology of Mass Communications, which merged two academic areas – journalism theory and sociology.

The academic focus of the department is placed on audience studies, media and religion studies, sociological study of journalistic community and sociological culture of journalists, and, among other things, the department theorized and conducted research on mediatization, media in civil society, media consumption by diverse social groups, etc. Chairing the Department for 20 years, Professor Prokhorov became one of the originators of the empirical approach in journalism studies, as well as actively engaged in theoretical conceptualization of modern journalism.

The commemorative meeting was both scientifically focused and practice-oriented, with its extensive thematic scope reflecting broad research interests of Evgeniy Prokhorov. The Dean of the Faculty of Journalism Elena Vartanova elaborated on his contribution to the academic life of the Faculty. Her speech was followed by the discussion on the problem of digital etiquette in the context of education. The meeting was completed with the presentation of research practices themed ‘Russian archives in the digital environment: the use in science’.
