February 28: Virtual Open Day for International Students

16.02.2021

1081_1080_max.jpgFuture MSU students from abroad will be able to learn all the essential information about the University, student activities and specific features of admission in 2021. Deans and representatives of the Admissions Committees will expand upon the application and admission procedures in 2021, go into detail about the entrance examinations, academic competitions and preparatory courses, and, most importantly, those who wish to ask questions will be given an opportunity to do so in real time.

On January 17 similar event was held for Russian applicants. Those interested in programmes of the Faculty of Journalism were greeted by the Dean Elena Vartanova. In her encouraging welcoming speech she recalled the past achievements of the Faculty, spoke about the ways it is currently functioning and handling the pandemic situation and outlined her bright vision of the future. She emphasized that the Faculty of Journalism of Lomonosov Moscow State University has been preparing first-rate journalists and media experts for more than 70 years.

Among its distinctive features the Dean mentioned the skilled juxtaposition of the fundamental academic approach and innovations. The recently elaborated Digital Journalism programme is aimed at educating future media communication experts to create integrated digital projects. The Faculty of Journalism is equipped with the state-of-the-art multimedia center which provides the students with the latest facilities for creating high-quality entertainment products. Talking about the virtues of the Faculty, Elena Vartanova was proud to list numerous research schools which have been demonstrating excellence in media studies since the very birth of this discipline. Besides, owing to the extensive network of international contacts the Faculty has the capacity to monitor latest media trends all over the world, which allows for the comprehensive development. Cooperation with the universities from all parts of the globe is a significant part of life on Mokhovaya Street, with the most influential scholars in the field of mass communication studies coming to share their experience and professional opinion with the students of MSU. Among them was a prominent British communication theorist Denis McQuail who was invited in the early nineties to inaugurate the UNESCO Chair of Journalism and Mass Communication.

The pandemic crisis has certainly been a challenge. However, it revealed the importance of media literacy and gave impetus to the exploration of the new means of communication within the digital environment. Conscious of the current issues, the Faculty lays emphasis on developing the students’ ability to employ all the digital technologies. The very format of the winter open day event serves as an illustration of the above-mentioned. Besides the online meeting and broadcast on TikTok, a whole range of other activities was offered to the future students: multimedia audio guide across the Faculty created by the students, video tours prepared by the Faculty professors, series of social media posts under specific hashtags. This also undoubtedly testifies to the fact that distance can not cause any inconveniences and by no means can it prevent future students from learning about the unique atmosphere of the Faculty of Journalism. We encourage international students to sign up and learn more about our Faculty on February 28th on this platform.
