Academic and Industrial Community Discussed the Current State of Journalism

On February 6-8, 2019 the international conference ‘Journalism in 2018: creativity, profession, industry’ took place at the Faculty of Journalism, MSU. On February 7 during the plenary session scholars, media managers and media regulators discussed the future and current state of media industry.

The Dean Professor Elena Vartanova pointed out in her greeting speech that universities need to have connections with the industry and meet the needs of the employers. The Dean also thanked the representatives of the industry for their interest in academic conferences, which are frequently attended by media managers and journalists.

The Deputy Head of the Department for Permissive Work, Control and Supervision in the Field of Mass Communications of Roskomnadzor Alexandr Izhko spoke about the tactics of countering ‘fake news’ in Russian and foreign experience. According to him, journalists have less and less sources to verify information, and as a result false stories are spreading around the media.

The Deputy General Director, editor-in-chief of TASS Maxim Filimonov touched on the topic of modern business media models and emphasized the important role of media literacy.

The General Director, editor-in-chief of the publishing house ‘Komsomolskaya Pravda’, Vladimir Sungorkin shared his point of view on how to train professional journalists. “You have to teach students the four crafts: to take pictures, to put words into sentences, to moderate social networks and to do radio reports” – was his main advice.

The President of the Associations of Communication Agencies of Russia Sergey Piskarev spoke about the peculiarities of modern advertisement. He concluded that advertisers needed the consumers who watched professional content.

After the plenary session discussion continued within the framework of other sessions and ‘round table’ meetings.

The Faculty of Journalism, MSU holds this international conference every February. It brings together over 400 participants including legislators, journalists, media managers, media researchers, teachers and students from all over the country. The conference was organized by the Faculty of Journalism jointly with the Union of Journalists of Russia, the National Association of Mass Media Researchers (NAMMI) and the School of Journalism and Mass Communications, Saint Petersburg State University.
