The Faculty of Journalism, Lomonosov Moscow State University and University of California, San Diego (USA) signed Memorandum of Understanding

In July 2014 the Faculty of Journalism, Lomonosov Moscow State University and University of California, San Diego (USA) signed Memorandum of Understanding.

University of California is one of the world's leading public research universities. University of California, San Diego (UCSD) has been highly ranked by all world university rankings. In 2013-2014 it was ranked 40th in the world by Times Higher University Ranking and 63rd in the world by QS World University Ranking. UCSD is one of America's Public Ivy universities, which recognizes top public research universities in the United States. It was also ranked 9th among public universities by U.S. News & World Report.

UCSD was established in 1960 near the pre-existing Scripps Institution of Oceanography. It offers a rich variety of different undergraduate and graduate programs, including social sciences. Department of Communication, which belongs to the division of social sciences, became the first Communication department in the University of California system in 1982, and is now among the best-known communication departments nationwide and worldwide. The Undergraduate Major in Communication is among the most popular at UCSD, the department's Ph.D. program, with about 50 current students, is known for the innovative scholars it produces.

Professor Daniel C. Hallin (Department of Communication, UCSD) advocated for the collaboration with the Faculty of Journalism, MSU. Professor Hallin is a world-renowned media scholar and one of the authors of the bestseller "Comparing Media Systems: Three Models of Media and Politics (2004). He visited Moscow State University several times and gave lectures here. His public lecture "The Development of Media Systems: West and East" together with Professor Paolo Mancini (University of Perugia, Italy) in November 2013 became of the key events during the Moscow Readings conference that year.

Memorandum of Understanding with UCSD outlines several fields of collaboration: joint research projects, faculty and student exchanges, exchange of publications on current research and other ones.
