In 2023, the latest issue of World of Media. Journal of Russian Media and Journalism Studies brings together six research papers on the issues related to media presentation of diverse conflicts, challenges the journalists faced during COVID-19, media representation of the technologies in Russian business media, demediatization in the context of representation of Russian youth policy in the social media accounts of the authorities, along with the issues linked to visual environmental reporting and propaganda methods in modern user-generated content.
NAMMI Conference Held on December 8

Annual conference of the National Association of Mass Media Researchers offered a big opening plenary discussion completed with award ceremony and followed by three comprehensive rounds of thematic sessions. Participants from across Russia joined the conference, including scholars from Kazakhstan, Siberia, North Caucasus, thus supporting the high status of the all-Russian forum. The event became a perfect nexus of big questions and big ideas, allowing to finalize the year of hard work.

Annual international Moscow Readings conference held in hybrid format on November 9-10 attracted roughly 200 participants from over 30 countries. 25 profound thematic sessions along with two plenaries and speakers joining from different cities of Russia and states across the globe offered a fertile ground for topical discussions. International Academic Conference 'Journalism Education in Russia and China in the Age of Digitalization' Held on June 8-9

A large two-day international conference brought together 15 thematic sessions in three languages along with a comprehensive plenary meeting. The conference attracted colleagues from different parts of Russia and China, who joined the discussions both in-person and online. Thematic sessions were in large part concerned with the modernization of journalism education in the two countries and embraced most relevant topics, such as the use of state-of-the-art technologies and inclusion efforts.

Dr. Anna Gladkova, Dr. Glenn Muschert and Dr. Massimo Ragnedda noted the impressive scale of the study and commented on the ways to systematize the rich empirical data.

The solemn signing of the Memorandum of Agreement between 12 field-specific universities associations in Russia and China was held on December 8, becoming the highlight of the event. The document aims to promote education in Russia and China through joint efforts. The two-day event was also marked by a meeting of associations’ secretaries, a plenary session, and presentations by associations’ leaders. Creation of a new association that unites sport education institutions in Russia and China was another important milestone. The Forum was attended by the leaders of associations, representatives of member universities, and honorary guests – Ministry officials from both countries.

On February 3–5, the Faculty of Journalism held traditional ‘Journalism: Creativity, Profession, Industry’ conference. The academic event included a meeting of the Russian Council for Journalism Education, 2 plenary sessions, 1 English-language special panel, 29 thematic sessions, and 18 round table meetings. The speakers discussed the most acute issues of journalism studies related to the digitalization and mediatization of society, e.g. new content strategies, new methods of journalism education, business models in digital environment, new media, online reputation, digital capital, digital youth, modern media language and many other interesting problems.

Journalism section meeting of the conference was held on April 27, featuring five presentations by Faculty's researchers. Professor Elena Vartanova studied the problem of digital platforms dominance. Doctor Olga Smirnova focused her presentation on the conflict analysis of mass media content. Doctor Maxim Babyuk dedicated his research to the institutional-legal and management aspects of Soviet news agencies of the 20's. Ivan Aslanov presented a comprehensive report on the framing effect in media texts featuring the topic of mental health, where he studied the cognitive function of metaphor. Joint report by Doctor Andrey Virkovsky and Doctor Mikhail Makeenko, was devoted to the career histories of young qualified journalists in Moscow.

International scientific-practical conference on current challenges and contemporary problems of journalism has been organized by the Faculty of Journalism for more than 30 years. This year, owing to the pandemic situation, this landmark event has undergone changes. The Covid-19 crisis affected both the format of the conference, which was held online on Zoom, and the thematic scope, since a substantial part of the issues addressed by the speakers was linked to the pandemic challenges.

The conference has been organized at the Faculty of Journalism for 30 years and is currently one of the biggest and best-known academic conferences on media and journalism in Russia. In 2020, the conference addressed the issues of media convergence, media system transformations, the shift of journalists' functions and roles in the digital age, as well as local and ethnic media developments trends, gender studies, media psychology and many other topics.

Professor Greg Simons (Uppsala University, Sweden) was awarded title of honorary professor of the Faculty of Journalism. In 2019 the book «Digital Media Inequalities: Policies against Divides, Distrust and Discrimination» edited by Josef Trappel (University of Salzburg, Austria) was published by Nordicom (Gothenburg, Sweden). The book united researchers from Austria, Belgium, Great Britain, Hungary, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Finland, France and other countries. The book contains one of the latest articles by Professor Denis Mcquail (1935-2017), who also was an Honorary Professor of the Faculty of Journalism, MSU. The book was published as a result of Euromedia Research Group work.

On March 19, 2019 the President of Armenia Armen Sargsyan met the Dean of the Faculty of Journalism, MSU Professor Elena Vartanova and Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation to the Republic of Armenia Sergey Kopyrkin. Mr. Sargsyan expressed his reverent attitude to MSU, where his friends and colleagues work. He emphasized that he had always collaborated and communicated with colleagues from MSU in terms of scientific and teaching activities. The President also pointed out the importance of the MSU’ branch activities in Armenia and suggested to develop joint research and educational projects.

The overarching theme of the conference this year was ‘Digital Transformations of Mass Media: Regional, National and Global Aspects’. The conference was attended by 200 scholars from 30 countries of the world, who presented a fascinating mosaic of contemporary media studies. Like in the previous years, the conference was organized with support of the Federal Agency for Press and Mass Communications of the Russian Federation.

The Faculty organized tours for the participants to fill them on in the events of MSU’ history and show them a beautiful building.
