November At The Faculty Of Journalism

Student societies are continuing their efforts in raising new generation of researchers, while faculty scholars are engaged in important discussions of the pressing issues of media production and education.
November 17 marked the official opening of the Student Research Society at the Faculty of Journalism. 163 students became members, having chosen one of the seven research areas: game industry, fashion industry, media personality phenomenon, digital worlds, streaming and podcasting, cultural studies, and methodsof work with research sources and materials. Academic advisors have already formed a plan of interactive assignments for aspiring scholars.

Avid researchers, students of the Faculty of Journalism have brought to life another scientific association, Youth Science Club. On November 21, its members met to explore methods of work with historical documents in journalism studies.

November also brought great lectures in the Current Issues of Mass Media lecture series. Launched by Dr. Anna Gladkova, the series features guest lectures by international media scholars. Throughout November, students had a chance to listen to lectures by Professor Claudia Mellado from the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso, Professor Jairo Lugo-Ocando from the University of Sharjah, and Professor Afonso de Albuquerque from Fluminense Federal University. Altogether this semester, the lecture series gathered 12 top media scholars from different parts of the globe, including Chile, Brazil, India, South Africa, China, UK, UAE, Egypt. Moreover, throughout the last weeks, Faculty scholars engaged in several important expert discussions as part of different nation-wide projects.

IMG_9523.jpegIMG_9192.jpegOn November 15, Dean of the Faculty of Journalism, Professor Elena Vartanova joined the forum on digital technologies, smart processes and big-data in Russian mass media held as part of the annual publishing forum. Other faculty researchers – Dr. Daniil Lapin and Dr. Maria Krasheninnikova discussed the problems of the qualified personnel in media business.

Another comprehensive discussion was held on November 16 as part of the International Festival of Television Programs and Short Films. Themed around new challenges, skills and competencies of the modern journalist, round table discussion featured talk by Professor Vartanova. The scholar outlined emerging features of modern journalism and explained the importance of journalism education in the new era.

On November 21, Dean of the Faculty of Journalism joined the discussion in the TASS Press Center to voice her concerns about the over-integration of messengers in school education, and the need to raise digital literacy of parents.
