‘Journalism In 2021: Creativity, Profession, Industry’ Conference

5 февраля_пленарное.pngOn February 3–5, the Faculty of Journalism held traditional ‘Journalism: Creativity, Profession, Industry’ conference. The conference serves as a platform, which brings together a diversity of researches based on different approaches, and lays emphasis on three key aspects of journalism: creativity, profession, and industry. This year the conference was linked to the 70th anniversary of the Faculty of Journalism, and 75th anniversary of journalism education at Lomonosov Moscow State University. This conferenceIt opens a series of celebratory events, which will mark the anniversary. Professor Vartanova noted that this is an excellent occasion to summarize the past 75 years and reflect on the future of journalism.

The academic event included a meeting of the Russian Council for Journalism Education, 2 plenary sessions, 1 English-language special panel, 29 thematic sessions, and 18 round table meetings. The speakers discussed the most acute issues of journalism studies related to the digitalization and mediatization of society, e.g. new content strategies, new methods of journalism education, business models in digital environment, new media, online reputation, digital capital, digital youth, modern media language and many other interesting problems.

The conference has been organized at the Faculty of Journalism for more than 30 years and is currently one of the biggest and best-known academic conferences on media and journalism in Russia. As usual, the event was supported by National Association of Russian Mass Media Researchers, Russian Union of Journalists, School of Journalism and Mass Communications at St. Petersburg State University and Federal Educational and Methodological Association.

The first day of the conference traditionally started with a meeting of the Russian Council for Journalism Education. It was opened by The Dean of the Faculty of Journalism, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Professor Elena Vartanova, and Vice Rector of Lomonosov Moscow State University, Head of the Office of Educational-Methodical activities and Supplementary Education Stanislav Bushev. The experts discussed the changing educational structure and current methodological agenda. Professor Vartanova and her colleagues from other cities of the Russian Federation proceeded to share their experience and reflect on the problems of journalism training.

The second day started with a plenary session, organized in tribute to the memory of the long-standing Dean and President of the Faculty of Journalism Yassen Zassoursky. Professor Yassen Zassoursky was a leading figure in media studies and a founder of many projects, including this conference. During this plenary session, experts from different fields of journalism talked about their projects and the role of Professor Zassoursky in their professional formation. The speakers included Professor Yuri Baturin and Professor Mikhail Fedotov, the authors of the Law on the Media, which celebrates its 30th anniversary; Darya Zaretskaya, deputy editor-in-chief of Rambler/News, a leading online media outlet in Russia; Yadviga Yuferova, deputy editor-in-chief of Rossiyskaya Gazeta, official government gazette of the Russian Federation; Sergey Shargunov, Head of the Association of Writers and Publishers Unions of Russia.

The first round of thematic sessions included an English-language special panel headlined ‘Globalizing Faculty of Journalism, Lomonosov Moscow State University: Historical Path and Current Trends’. The panel featured talks by the international partners of the Faculty, who shared their most pleasant memories about the Faculty and its scholars. The meeting was opened by Professor Vartanova, who talked about the history of the Faculty, and the achievements of the previous Dean of the Faculty of Journalism – Professor Yassen Zassursky. The scholar also outlined the current paths of development and stressed that international cooperation remains the key priority.

The speakers included international media experts Professor Paolo Mancini (University of Perugia), Professor Mark Deuze (University of Amsterdam), Professor Hannu Nieminen (University of Helsinki), and Dr. Massimo Ragnedda (Northumbria University). The scholars recalled their first visits to the Faculty of Journalism, expressed their thoughts on the Faculty’s projects and researchers, and shared their ideas for collaboration.

The last day of the conference started with a plenary session, where young scientists presented the latest results of their researches. The scholars focused on various topics, such as Russian academic discourse, TV channels strategies on TikTok, digital strategies of Russian broadcasters, and metaphorical framing. As usual, their presentations were followed by an in-depth discussion, during which new exciting prospects for further research were outlined. The conference was completed with the last several rounds of thematic sessions and round table meetings.
