Elena Vartanova and Robert Picard Will Discuss New Media Consumption Practices During a ‘Topical Seminar’ Meeting

Elen-leon-mak (3).pngIn the fall semester 2021, the Faculty of Journalism, MSU is resuming a ‘Topical seminar’, a series of online meetings with renowned scholars in the field of media studies. The next seminar, devoted to transformations of media consumption strategies, will be held on September 7th at 16:00 MSK. The Dean of the Faculty of Journalism, MSU, Academician of the Russian Academy of Education Professor Elena Vartanova will give a talk ‘Advantages and disadvantages of digital media consumption: new dictatorship of the audience?’

The second speaker will be a senior research fellow at the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism at University of Oxford, a fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, and a fellow at the Information Society Project at Yale University Law School Professor Robert Picard. Professor Picard will give a talk ‘How contemporary trends are changing media use and strategy.’

Pre-registration is required, the deadline for registration is September 6th. Registered participants will receive a Zoom link in advance.

‘Topical seminar’ is a project of the Faculty of Journalism, which began in the spring semester of 2021 and has already become known among Russian and foreign researchers. The goal of the online seminars is to organize an open discussion platform for Russian and foreign scholars to share the results of their current work in the field of journalism and communication studies. Previous meetings featured talks by Professor Terry Flew (University of Sydney), Professor Oscar Westlund (Oslo Metropolitan University), Professor Mark Deuze (University of Amsterdam), Professor Nico Carpentier (Charles University in Prague) and other scholars.

The event is extremely significant for the development of cross-national research approaches, while contributing to the conceptualization of distinctive features of Russian media science. The seminars take place once a month and are open to all attendees who registered in advance.
