The 11th International Media Readings in Moscow "Mass Media and Communications-2019"

On October 17–18, 2019 the Faculty of Journalism, MSU held the 11th International Media Readings in Moscow "Mass Media and Communications 2019". Scholars from 27 countries came to Moscow to present theoretical and empirical research on media digitalization. Moscow Readings started with several preconference events on October 16. The meetings were devoted to media theory, science journalism, fake news and other issues. As part of pre-conference events, a special conference of young scholars was organized at the Faculty of Journalism.

On October17, the Dean of the Faculty of Journalism Professor Elena Vartanova officially opened the conference with her greeting speech. She stressed the important role of this conference, which helps to establish friendship and partnership between various researchers and institutions. Director of the School of Journalism and Mass Communications of Saint Petersburg State University Professor Anatoly Puyu also noted the importance of such international platforms for building longstanding academic ties.

Plenary sessions on October 17 and 18 were devoted to digital communication and main trends in this field. Professor Elena Vartanova (Faculty of Journalism, MSU, Russia), Professor Josef Trappel (University of Salzburg, Austria), Professor Paolo Mancini (University of Perugia, Italy), Professor Mark Deuze (University of Amsterdam, The Netherlands), Dr. Michał Głowacki (University of Warsaw, Poland) and Dr. Massimo Ragnedda (Northumbria University, UK) discussed social inequalities and digital divide, media regulation and new market trends as well as challenges for traditional theoretical paradigms.

Over 200 scholars from 27 countries took part in the Moscow Readings conference this year. They presented their research at 29 sessions, including several special sections: "Digital, social and cultural divides: interrelations and interdependencies" organized by the IAMCR Digital Divide Working Group; "Media and communication in post- and neo-authoritarian societies: global trends, local formats" organized by the IAMCR Communication in Post- and Neo-Authoritarian Societies Working Group; and "Fifteen years of ‘Comparing Media Systems' book: theoretical legacy in the new digital world" (in celebration of 15 years of "Comparing Media Systems: Three Models of Media and Politics" book by Daniel C. Hallin and Paolo Mancini, first published in 2004).

During the closing ceremony the secretary of the Moscow Readings organizing committee Dr. Anna Gladkova thanked all participants and added that Moscow Readings have been one of the largest media forums in Russia for 11 years in a row.
