Digital Media and the Russian Society: “Digitalization-2018” Forum at the Faculty of Journalism

On December 4, 2018 the Faculty of Journalism, MSU organized a session “Digital Media in Russia: Vectors and Drivers of the Development” which took place within a framework of the “Digitalization-2018” international forum at Lomonosov Moscow State University. The Dean of the Faculty of Journalism, corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Education, Professor Elena Vartanova moderated the event.

During the two session meetings (“Media audience in the new digital environment” and “Transformation of the media economy under the influence of digitalization”), the participants discussed the role of digitalization in the modern society. The researchers of the Faculty of Journalism presented their works: Irina Poluehtova, Maria Lukina, Anna Gladkova, Sergey Smirnov, Denis Dunas, Andrey Zamkov, Maria Krasheninnikiva, Anastasia Folts. Moreover, practitioners in the field of the modern communications also took part in the event. First Deputy General Director of RTRS for Network Management, Operation and Development Viktor Pinchuk, digital-director of Vedomosti Sergey Paranko, Head of the User Content Direction of the Project Zdrav.FOM Mikhail Volodin shared their experiences of working in the digital media industry.

The participants discussed the issues of information security and cyber threats, modern approaches to the media research, media regulation in the digital environment, content monetization models, presence of ethnic communities on the Internet, as well as the new media’ influence on the shaping of public opinion and media consumption of young people.

Both scholars and practitioners agreed that the growing role of digital media requires closer attention of the academic community, and one of the possible reactions to this challenge is the development of research collaborations with representatives of business community and state institutions.
